Types of Oral Diseases
Dr Kotze diagnoses and treats the following oral diseases:
Oral Cancer
A comprehensive examination is done to look for signs of oral cancer or potentially malignant disorders. The goal of oral cancer screening is to identify oral cancer early, when there is a greater chance for a cure. During consultation, we examine your mouth, and if necessary, we use additional tests to identify and diagnose abnormal lesions in your mouth.
Oral infections
Any problem that affects your mouth can make it hard to eat, drink, or even smile. Some common oral infections include bacterial, viral (Human Papillomavirus, Human Herpesvirus) or fungal (Candida) infections.
Autoimmune diseases affecting the mouth
Autoimmune diseases are caused by an abnormal immune response to some trigger. Multiple autoimmune diseases can affect the oral cavity and the oral cavity may be the first site of presentation. Some of these include Lichen Planus, Pemphigus, Pemphigoid, Lupus erythematosus, Erythema multiforme and Sjogren’s syndrome.
Oral ulcers
This could be due to immune dysregulation, viral infections, chemical burns and trauma among others. These painful sores may appear anywhere in the mouth depending on the cause and can make eating, drinking and talking uncomfortable. Dr Kotze is specifically trained to diagnose the origin of the ulcers and treat them accordingly.
